Today Area Secretary Robert Peel and Chair of Seal Parish Council Chris Haslam installed a new map panel in the long-neglected frame on the village green at Godden Green. The new panel is funded by Kent Ramblers as part of a project in conjunction with Explore Kent to refurbish some of the 129 parish footpath maps installed between 20 and 30 years ago right across Kent. The funding for the project comes from sales of Kent Ramblers' walking guides which have proved very popular – they are available from our Publications Page. Godden Green is an excellent place to start a walk, with opportunities to walk into Knole Park, along the Greensand Ridge to Ightham Mote, north to the Iron Age hill fort known as Oldbury Hill or south to One Tree Hill and Underriver. The pub, the Buck's Head, has produced a leaflet of suitable walks which is available on its website.
The poor state of this particular board was actually the inspiration for the whole project to restore as many of these maps as possible. One day back in 2023 (gosh, how long it has all taken) Robert was sitting on the bench in front of the board eating his lunch when he noticed the board and thought what a shame it was that a board in such a great location (opposite the pub) was not being usefully exploited to encourage people out into the superb surrounding countryside.
