# Getting Started

Whether you are new to walking or an experienced rambler looking for company, Kent Ramblers offers something for everyone. Here is everything you need to know to take your first steps.

## Walking Options

You have several choices when starting a walking routine. The simplest approach is stepping out from your front door for an informal walk. Kent offers numerous country parks, such as Knole Park, with well-maintained tracks suitable for casual footwear.

## Benefits of Group Walking

Walking with a group brings companionship, motivation and the opportunity to walk in more remote places without requiring advanced navigation skills. This is particularly valuable for newcomers to recreational walking who are building confidence.

## Finding a Group

To explore Kent's walking groups, visit the [home page](https://kent.ngx-ramblers.org.uk/) and select either the map or group list at the bottom. Groups vary considerably — some offer longer, faster walks while others provide shorter or slower options. Pub stops availability also differs between groups.

## Trying Before Joining

Non-members can participate in 2 or 3 walks before committing to membership. Request a group's walk programme to begin exploring.

## Equipment and Preparation

You will need:
- A map and compass (if walking independently)
- Appropriate footwear and clothing
- A rucksack
- Food and drink

Rather than making expensive purchases upfront, especially boots, consider joining a short group walk first where experienced members can offer guidance on what works best.

## Fitness Levels

The Kent groups put on a wide range of walks, some of which you will need to be very fit to complete and others are available for those less fit or for beginners. Contact walk leaders to discuss suitability, and consider arranging transport to complete partial walks if needed.

Many of our existing members have artificial hips and many are in their 70s and 80s. There really is something for everyone.
