Lost Ways
Project Background
This initiative was announced at the February 2017 Annual General Meeting as Kent's response to legislation requiring paths to be recorded on the definitive map by 2026 or risk being lost permanently.
The project seeks to identify and document paths that exist on the ground but are not reflected on official maps. These are potentially Lost Ways if we do not get them recorded.
How It Works
The project relies on volunteers performing field research and historical documentation work. Three volunteer roles are available:
- LWR - Lost Ways Records Research Volunteer: Searches historical records to support path claims, with much work available online
- LWF - Lost Ways Field Research Volunteer: Visits candidate locations to photograph conditions and gather local testimony
- LWV - Lost Ways Route Volunteer: Combines both roles to complete comprehensive research on individual routes
