Vineyards of the North Downs - Boxley

Some interesting aspects of the history of Kent feature on this walk through farmland, woodland tracks and quiet roads. We’ll encounter a neolithic burial chamber dating back (probably) 6,000 years; hear about the wealthy medieval monks at Boxley Abbey; and enjoy autumn in the extensive vineyards first harvested in 2021.

Soon after leaving Boxley Churchyard we’ll climb to the North Downs Way (walking poles advised; will be muddy after rain) and enter the woodland of Boxley Warren Nature Reserve. On leaving the North Downs Way, we'll follow the Pilgrims Way, taking a break by the neolithic White Horse Stone (bring own refreshments).

Our return to Boxley passes through Boarley Farm and Street Farm, together forming one of the largest vineyards in Kent, cultivated and managed by Chapel Down. 

Moderate walk with four stiles; one long, steep ascent and one long and fairly steep descent.
